Yesterday I had so much fun going gory for Hallowe'en that I decided to try the other Hallowe'en prop from Katink.  Along with another "new me", the picture really does look mystical.

Charcoal Makes Me Think of Work

Dear Diary:

When Luna posted that the colour this week would be "Charcoal", I cringed.  In my first world, I have a warm jacket that I wear at this time of year, to do yard work - raking the leaves, fertilizing the garden and pulling out the shovels for the soon-to-be snow.  Of course, the heavy plaid jacket I wear is charcoal *cringe* so I looked in my second world for one I could wear for this post.

So now I'm feeling guilty!  I guess I'd better put on that jacket and do what I should be doing....ummmm....tomorrow.

Those Dreaded School Pictures

Dear Diary:

The other day my neighbour popped in to show me the school pictures of her adored #1 daughter.  I gave the appropriate "Oh beautiful!  How sweet!  Such a nice smile" but was not very sincere with any of my comments.  The pictures were typical student pictures, shot as quickly as the shutter could click. 

I thought back to my horrible student pictures that inevitably went into the yearbook for posterity.

Why did I always have a bad hair day on THAT particular day?  Why did the bags under my eyes have handles?  Why was it I looked as if I gained 20lb over night?  And of course the school uniform certainly didn't add to the look!

I hated those school pictures.  I never had one taken that was flattering in any way.  Just like my neighbour, my Mom proudly showed them to all her friends.  I guess that's what Moms do.

The Quirkiness of Antique Brass

Dear Diary:

Brass is an alloy of zinc and copper.   To make it look antique, a chemical is applied to darken the colour so that it looks aged.

Oktoberfest is a Fun Time in Every World

Dear Diary:

I would love to be able to go to the Oktoberfest celebrations in Germany.  It started September 22 and runs until this coming Saturday.  I think it would be great to be there at this time for the music, the food and of course the beer.

Canada also has Oktoberfest festivities in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario.  There is an annual nine day celebration starting tomorrow, October 5 and ending on Saturday the 13th.  There are parades, contests and lots of good food too.    

However since I can't fly to either place, I flew to Munich in my second world. It was great fun the other night with lots of entertainment and dancing.  There will be ongoing celebrations until this Saturday and you can pick up a schedule at the landing point.

Amaranth is the Colour of the Week

Dear Diary:

Another beautiful colour for the Challenge this week.  I know the Amaranth is a perennial, but it's too cold in my part of the country to last over the winter.  In some places it's considered a weed.  Imagine!  Hummingbirds love to feed from the flower and are attracted to gardens who plant amaranth.

Often the seed pods can be ground to make grain.  I've never tried that but have had quinoa which comes from the same family.

Wear your Favourite Jersey This Friday

Dear Diary:

Oh yes!!  This Friday, September 28th,  is Jersey Day in Canada!  It's a time to wear your favourite sports jersey, whether it be from a professional team, a house league or just a neighbourhood street league.  During the week, ending with Saturday, September 29th teams and organizations across the country, have games, open houses, try-it days or tournaments to promote sports on all levels. 

Yes, I love my hockey so I'm here sitting in the stands, at the GOHA rink waiting for the season to start, wearing my favourite jersey of course.  The rink is a great place to visit if you like hockey in our second world.  The new season hasn't started yet but check here for the schedule. 

 

So let's get active for the rest of the week...and the rest of our lives.  Do some pilates, play badiminton, swim at the local pool but whatever you do, celebrate the sports in your area.

Dear Diary:

As I've said before, Fall is my favourite time of year, and as of yesterday, it's officially into the season.  One of the things I love to do is jam my packsack full of snacks and water and hike out into the woods.  The leaves are turning magnificent colours, the air is crisp and I can often see some wild life stocking up for hibernation.  So when this colour came up for the Challenge, I thought of me trudging out into the woods.

It just occurred to me.  Wearing this colour in the bush - during hunting season - not a good choice.  I hope no one mistakes me for a moose - strike that - a graceful deer!

I Wish for a World of Peace

Dear Diary:

September 21st has been celebrated as the International Day for World Peace or World Peace Day since 1982 and is to be free of war or violence on that day.  At the United Nations, the Peace Bell, forged from donated coins from children of all nations, is rung as a reminder of the importance of peace.

It reminded me of a time not so long ago that people also wanted world peace.  Was it more peaceful then or was it an attempt?

At this time, with the world in turmoil, people being displaced from homes and country, children exposed to crime and murder, we all need to wish for a better world.  Tomorrow let's hope that all violence will stop for the day....stop for the week...stop forever.

Papaya Whip

Dear Diary:

The weather has turned cool in my part of the world.  This morning it registered 2C.  A shocker when your feet hit the bare floor!  I heard a strange noise that clicked my sleepy mind into awareness.  Oh my!  It was the furnace coming on after being silent for so many months.

So in preparation for the cool mornings and warmer afternoons, I'm wearing a jacket and long pants, just as in my world.

A Day for Grandparents

Dear Diary:

Last Sunday was Grandparents' Day and it brought to mind a book that should have been written about my Grandmother.  The title is "Funny, You Don't Look Like a Grandmother".  It's a cute funny book about contemporary grandmothers.  And I had a grandmother exactly like that.

Bake cookies? No.  Read bedtime stories? Unh-unh.  Take a quiet trip to the library? Absolutely not.  But if you needed someone to hunt for garter snakes, walk through the bat cave or hike up the hill to find a lake on the top, she was there.

My Grandmother encouraged me to always follow my dreams even if they seemed out of reach.  She gave me a book by Guy de Moupassant when I was 14 and told me to learn a little history.  **cough cough**  I could bring my friends to her house, play music as loud as we wanted and she would help me roll up the rug so we could dance.  And of course she danced along with us.

I was fortunate to have my Grandmother in my life, for only a brief time, it seemed.  She taught me how to live.  All of us who have had grandparents to tell us the family history, to be a confidante or a baby sitter, count ourselves lucky to have had the "grandparent" experience.

Blue is my least favourite colour.  Have I said that before?  But out of the whole blue colour spectrum, navy and royal blue are the two I really like and have a lot of those shades in my closet.

Post Labour Day Fun

Dear Diary:

This past Monday was Labour Day and a day off for me.  The sun was shining on the lake, the sky was bright blue with fluffy white clouds and the water was nippy.  But it was kind of the last hurrah in my part of the world for any water sports.  September is here.  That means fall is just around the corner and of course, that leads to winter. Ok...let's not think about that while it's still warm out.

So considering the picture-perfect day, I decided to take the sea-do out for the last spin of the summer.

I enjoy getting out in the fresh air and speeding around the lake.  It's a great way to spend the afternoon.

Cinnamon Turns HOTTTTT!

A few years ago, there was an article circulating through email about the benefits of cinnamon.  It mentioned that for breakfast, spread liquid honey on your toast and then sprinkle a generous amount of cinnamon over it.  Supposedly, the combination was not only beneficial to your overall health but it was to lower your blood pressure too.

When I put on this dress, the man of my life said it definitely raised his.

The Peace Girls

Dear Diary:

I've really enjoyed buzzing around Vintage Fair the last couple of weeks.  As I stated in previous posts, I found I liked a lot of poses, clothes and jewelry that were offered there.  Yesterday, I persuaded my friend Chloe to join me so we both could buy a few things and I could post the two of us together.

We had a great time picking out our clothes.  Chloe loves the 80's look while I lean more toward the late 60's.  We had a wonderful afternoon flying from store to store.  When we arrived at Status, we found this great post that's so appropriate for us - Peace Girls.  It was so much fun and so many laughs.

Feldgrau is Fabulous

Dear Diary:

Since this is almost the end of August, and I notice that some of the trees are starting to turn colour already, feldgrau seemed the perfect shade of green for this time of year.  If my high school German serves me right, I think it means "field gray" but I loved the green in Luna's swatch better.

I've also been enjoying Vintage Fair.  I found I really love the "old" looks for some clothes.  I particularly liked this dress since my Mom had one similar in style, only in black.  It was such a classy style that seemed timeless and she wore it for years.

Russett is the Colour of the Week

Dear Diary:

This week, the colour in Luna's challenge was russett.  It was one of those colours that was very difficult for me to match and yet, at first, it didn't look like it would be.   Is it brown?  Could it be mauve?  Hmmm.... It took me a bit to look through the closet to try to find something that might come close.

I love this weekly colour test.  What a challenge it really is!
