Thinking About Dreamer...and me

Dear Diary:

Today marks the end of the second year of my life as a blogger.  I'm laughing as I type that as I don't really think of this as "blogging".  All I'm doing is sharing with you, my real life, blended into my second life. 

It's hard to know where I begin and Dreamer takes over.  Where I start, she finishes.  We like the same type of clothes, preferably jeans and a tee but occasionally we like to dress up too.  Oh and jewelry!!  Yes, we both spend WAY to much on that - especially the big earrings.  Then there's the shoe fetish.  Of course a girl can't have enough of those.

I love being me and I love being Dreamer.  Hopefully, you, my friends and readers, know us both a little more.  And in the coming year, perhaps we'll get to know even more of each other.

It's been a fun year.

I'm Really Meshed Up!

Dear Diary:

I've never been one for "hunts".  Not that I think they're not worthwhile, but the reason is I'm not very good at them.  I don't have the patience to search under / over / behind things and I'm not very observant of what I'm actually looking for.  However, I did go on the "Mesh Around Hunt" and picked up a few great things.

I chose to show some of the men's items since it seemed to fit my location, Fantasy City.  I found lots of great women's items too, as well as furniture.

The Hunt is still on.  In most places the blue "M" is fairly easy to find but what really helped were the hints found here. 

The Hunt has been going on for a few days now so the stores aren't quite so busy, so it's a good time to start.  I still have a few more places to visit and am looking forward to seeing what else I can find.  I actually found this a fun time and really enjoyed looking for all the great MESH items.

Pistachio Makes me Feel Peppy...or Preppy?

Dear Diary:

I always loved pistachios.  They have a mild and kind of sweet flavour.  When I was a kid, my Mom would buy them for me but I remembered them being a bright pinkish red.  I found out later that the nuts were dyed that colour to cover any blemishes.  I think I like them better natural.  And I don't think that red dye was probably good for you. 

Pistachios are so versatile.  They can be used when making sweet things, such as cookies and ice cream or in main dishes, particularly in Mediterranean or Indian cooking.

Magnetic Cobalt

Dear Diary:

When I do the Colour Challenge every week, the colour name always brings something to mind.  I knew that colbalt was some kind of metal but....  Of course inquiring minds like me, just had to look it up so I found the following explanation on this website:

Cobalt is a brittle, hard, transition metal with magnetic properties similar to those of iron. Cobalt is present in meteorites. Ore deposits are found in Zaire, Morocco and Canada.  Cobalt salts colour glass a beautiful deep blue colour.

And for my English friends, I found this interesting fact:
    
Marmite is a source of vitamin B₁₂, actually a compound containing cobalt.  Marmite is available in the USA. Try mixing it with peanut butter.

My Victoria Day Celebration

Dear Diary:

This past weekend was a long one for me and, even though the weather was good (but not perfect), I really enjoyed having Monday off work.

The Monday closest to May 25th, is celebrated as Queen Victoria's birthday and the birthday of Queen Elizabeth.  Schools and provincial offices are closed, as well as most retail businesses.  However, I was very surprised to learn that this is not one of the general paid holidays in some provinces.  Employers in Nova Scotia, as well in New Brunswick, Labrador or Newfoundland, may provide this day as a paid holiday, but it's not designated.  In Quebec it is not a statutory holiday. 

As for me, I enjoyed staying in my jammies all day and just generally doing nothing. Definitely my kind of a holiday.

Yummy Lemon Chiffon

Dear Diary:

Oh lemon chiffon!  What a tantalizing colour that is!  When I first read the colour choice for the challenge this week, my mouth started watering.  Lemon chiffon cake....lemon chiffon pie....lemon chiffon pudding.  Then I had to talk to myself to say, "Why do you always think about food first?  Think outside your stomach!"  So I had to force myself to think about other lemon chiffon.  I visualized a flowing gown of chiffon in a pale lemon colour but that's not really me so here's what I came up with.

Cool and casual for a hot summer's day.  But still thinking about that cake.

Denim Isn't Just Blue Any More

Dear Diary:

I love my jeans.  Some come baggy, some are skinny.  They can be dark blue or totally faded.  Boot cut or cropped.  Whatever the style, whatever the colour, I love them all.  So when I went to buy another pair last week, I noticed a colour change in my denims had taken place.  Jeans are not just various shades of blue.  Now they range from pastels to neon.

It seems the trend for bright colours in tees and dresses have also come down into the jean category.  I think that's rather nice. 

As I looked through the stores, I've noticed how clothing colours have a certain "Mondrian" look.  It seems that when combining bright colours, one can add a variety of shades and hues and still look great.

I ended up buying a pair of lime green jeans with a royal blue top.  I'm now looking for the perfect time to wear them.

Deep Pink on Mother's Day

Dear Diary:

Pink - any shade of, any hue of - is my least favourite colour but it hit me, as I was scrounging through my closet, looking for the one or two items available in the dreaded pink, that this was a very appropriate colour to choose for this Sunday's Colour Challenge.  Of course, it's Mother's Day!  And as usual on this day, I remember the women in my family who preceded me - my Mom, my Grandmother(s) and the many non-family women who impacted my life.  They all made me what I am today.

Then I realized all the confident, interesting women I've met in my second world who have also given me friendship, encouragement and laughter and have made a footprint on who I am.

Therefore, to all Mothers, in all worlds, in all countries, understand what a difficult job you're carrying out and how much influence you're having on us all.

Dear Diary:

Years ago, on a family trip to British Columbia, my Mother taught me how to knit.  It was a simple stitch I used to make a doll blanket.  Over the years, I stopped knitting  as none of my friends were able to knit.  So, what a surprise when I read an article saying that knitting was "new" again.

Knitting is not just for grannies any more.  The knit chicks are taking over.  Yarn sales are up at the craft stores, while the Internet is helping with free patterns and chat rooms that give help and advice.

Expressing one's creativity is enticing people into trying knitting.  The younger generation are looking for a creative outlet, that produces tangible items.  Craft shows are displaying more hand knitted items, from mitts and scarves to afghans and clothing.

I've gone out to buy some wool and looked through the closet for my knitting needles.  Anyone need a doll blanket?

The Pushy Thistle

Dear Diary:

I love my garden.  I love working in the earth and introducing new plants to the old ones.  But when I planted a Globe thistle, depicted to be "decorative", acknowledged to be eye catching, and promising not to be invasive, I got quite a surprise.  The plant literally took over!  Years later, I'm still digging out the roots.

Pushy though it was, the thistle was showy and a lovely colour and certainly made itself known in the garden.

Every Day Should Be Earth Day

Dear Diary:


This Sunday, April 22nd is Earth Day. 

The celebration has been carried on for over 40 years, bringing awareness and appreciation of our planet to everyone.

On this day we should be aware of several things we can do to help the Earth.  If on April 22nd, we all could pick 5 things to do to it would help.  Here are my five things:

1. I'm riding my bike today.
2. I've planted a tree.
3. I'm reducing, reusing and recycling.
4. I did shopping without using plastic bags.
5. I planted shrubs around the house for insulation.

RMS Titanic

Dear Diary:

Yesterday marked the 100th anniversary of The Titanic leaving Southampton, England.  On Tuesday, the city commemorated the occasion with a ceremony at the dock, where the ship left on April 10th, 1912. 

The Titanic was built between 1909 and 1911 and was the largest ship at that time.  The ship carried 2,224 passengers, from the very wealthy, to others who were emmigrating to the United States or Canada.   Five days after leaving port, RMS Titanic struck an iceberg south of Newfoundland and over 1500 were lost when the boat sank. 

The ship boasted many new safety features such as water tight compartments but it lacked enough life boats to take all passengers.  It was decided that women and children would be the first to leave the sinking ship, leaving behind men who were passengers and crew members.

Even though it's been a hundred years since the disaster, the Titanic is still the most talked about ship in history.  The story has been kept alive by movies and documentaries, and by this wonderful location in our second world.

So Noble is Royal Purple

Dear Diary:

Royal Purple, or Tyrian purple, is linked to royalty.  Early in history, purple-dyed cloth was very expensive so only the wealthy could afford it.  As a result, it became a status symbol for those high up in society.

To dye the cloth this particular colour, one had to obtain a natural secretion from sea snails.  Talk about labour intensive work!

But - oh -  I do feel very royal  in this look.

It's Hard to Give up my Stilettos

Dear Diary:

Ever so often you read about something that's bad for you - coffee, red meat, sugar - but I just read that high heels are the ultimate of nasties, even worse than smoking.  A proposal is for women to wear "negative heels", where the shoe slopes down from the ball of the foot.  This type of heel is better for our hips, spine,and knees, whereas  continual wearing of stilettos could even contribute to osteoporosis in time.

In addition, calf muscles will shrink from lifelong wearing of stilettos, and a sudden switch from high heels to flats could rip the Achilles tendon. 

Some women have elected for surgery to remove their baby toes so they can stuff their feet into tight pointy toe shoes.  I think that's a bit radical and unnecessary, all in the name of beauty shoes.

The information is from a new book, Every Woman's Guide to Foot Pain Relief: The New Science of Healthy Feet by Katy Bowman. The author also talks about other shoes that are harmful to our feet and our bodies. It's an interesting read, full of information about having healthy feet and how to keep them that way.

Today is the First Day of Spring

Dear Diary:

Yep...today is the Vernal Equinox, or the first day of Spring, where day and night are usually the same length.

It's almost 'spring' in my part of the world.  The mounds of snow are gone from my yard, leaving me with a feeling that soon I'll be able to get in my garden.  However, there's always that final HURRAH where we get the last snow of the season but hopefully it might pass us by this year.

In my other world, I've removed the snow from my roof and property and early this morning was out looking for flowers to plant.

I visited Herb's Garden, a place where I get most of my plants and trees.  Many of his items are changeable with the seasons which is a great feature when you're decorating your property.  Iris are so beautiful and have some many varieties.

I really enjoyed this jaunt into a sim full of beautiful plants and flowers that cover every type of climate you can get.  It certainly put me in the spring mood.

Wearin' of the - ummm- Blue [??]

Dear Diary:

When I read that the Colour Challenge for this week was St. Patrick's Blue, I thought Luna was playing with our minds.  But she wasn't! 

Historians say the original colour for St. Patrick was blue, not green and can be see on ancient Irish flags.  During the Irish Rebellion 1798, the clover became a symbl of nationalism so the "wearing of the green" became a regular practice.  Eventually the blue was fazed out.

So in the spirit of the Irish celebration, I've combined the original St. Patrick's blue with a Chinese inspired outfit.  Now that's International friendship for ya!

Aquamarine - The Colour of the Sea

Dear Diary:

The colour this week for the Colour Challenge is described as being "the colour of the sea" and what a perfect description that is!  The name actually does come from Latin, "aqua" meaning water and "marina" meaning sea.

Ancient sailors believed if they wore an aquamarine gem, they would be protected at sea and always come home safely.

This gemstone is also the birthstone of March.

International Women's Day

Dear Diary:

Today is International Women's Day and it has been observed as such since the early 1900's.  But even today, women still do not receive equal pay to men; they are underrepresented in business and politics; our education and health cannot compare to men's and the rate of violence against women is still very high.

In Canada, two women stand out as activists for women's rights.  Emily Stowe (1831-1903) was the first female doctor to practice in Canada, even though she was denied entrance to university because she was female.  She became a teacher since that was "woman's work".  She later went to a homeopathic medical school in the United States.  She was an early suffragist and considered the "mother" of the movement in Canada.

Nellie McClung (1873-1951) was a member of "The Famous Five", a group that launched the "Persons Case", challenging the BNA Act, asking if women were considered "persons".  The Supreme Court of Canada, in 1928, stated that women were not persons but that decision was overturned the next year.  Because Nellie and her group brought up this question, it paved the way for women to be acknowledged and to be allowed to serve in Government.

Amazing Avocado

Dear Diary:

Avocados can be used in so many ways.  You can put them in salads or sandwiches.  Make a great pesto for pasta.  Chop them into salsa or stuff them with fillings.  The only downfall is that they're really high in calories and fat, but it is a good fat, at least.

Just don't think about that when you're eating yummy guacamole!

I just love Luna's food colours for the Colour Challenge.  My mouth always starts to water as I'm writing the post.

Freedom to Read Week

Dear Diary:

Freedom to Read Week in Canada runs from Feb 26 to March 3.  I always like to support this because censorship is such a personal decision and such a hot topic!

Here is a statement right from the website:

Freedom to read can never be taken for granted. Even in Canada, a free country by world standards, books and magazines are banned at the border. Schools and libraries are regularly asked to remove books and magazines from their shelves. Free expression on the Internet is under attack. Few of these stories make headlines, but they affect the right of Canadians to decide for themselves what they choose to read.

Through history, books have been banned or burned so the populace cannot or will not read them.  Sometimes it's for religious or racial reasons, or it could be sexual explicitness or violence.  Of Mice and Men (John Steinbeck) and To Kill a Mockingbird have been on almost every list since they've been written.  Look at the list of the history of books that have been banned or burned.

The recent idea of re-writing Huckleberry Finn in order to eliminate words and social environment is descrediting Mark Twain.  Is that not like re-writing history?  I think one must consider the historical era surrounding the author's writing.

If you find the book, magazine or document offensive, then put it down and walk away.  Should we not be able to choose what we wish to read ourselves?
