Dear Diary:
I really don't know if this is the national colour although this green seems to be represented in the flag. However, when I was looking I found a reference to the very colourful village of Portmeirion, Wales. There are many colours displayed there.
But I need to focus on the moment. Here is my Wales.

Time For a Little Vacay!!
Dear Diary:
Ah yes! It's that time of year when vacations kick in and it's time to leave work for awhile and enjoy life. And that's the point I'm at right now.
I really need some time to do the things I want to do. I know, I know. There are weekends but they go so fast that I usually try to get caught up on all the necessities. So officially on Friday I'm on my HOLIDAYS!! I decided I would take a few days away with friends and do some shopping, eat lots and sleep late. Now that's a VACATION!!

Happy Independence Day
Dear Diary:
July 4th all my American friends are out celebrating as I did a few days ago, with the fireworks, food and festivities.
Every year I wear this favourite tee of mine to show the bond between our two countries. I love this tee and was so fortunate to get it as it's no longer available.
Since 1959, the International Freedom Festival is jointly held in Detroit, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario in the last week of June as a mutual celebration of our two significant days - Independence Day and Canada Day.
Happy 236th Birthday, USA! Happy 4th to all my American friends!

Checking my Closet. I Have Nothing to Wear
Dear Diary:
Why is it when I look in my closet, no matter what world I'm in, it seems like I have nothing to wear. And yet, there doesn't seem to be any visible space.
I can stand looking for hours and not seeing a thing that appeals to me.
My inventory is completely out of control. Oh yes! I watched every YouTube tutorial on organization; I've read articles on "how to..." for control; and I've viewed every blog about inventory management skills. But nothing seems to help. I did start putting things in folders and organizing everything. It worked for awhile.
But then more and more was added and less and less time was spent on arranging it into those folders.
So now...
I just get in there and rustle through what I have - dresses? tees? jeans?
Somehow that really doesn't help. I'm left in the same position that I started with. Where is everything?
Good Night for now.

Thinking About Dreamer...and me
Dear Diary:
Today marks the end of the second year of my life as a blogger. I'm laughing as I type that as I don't really think of this as "blogging". All I'm doing is sharing with you, my real life, blended into my second life.
It's hard to know where I begin and Dreamer takes over. Where I start, she finishes. We like the same type of clothes, preferably jeans and a tee but occasionally we like to dress up too. Oh and jewelry!! Yes, we both spend WAY to much on that - especially the big earrings. Then there's the shoe fetish. Of course a girl can't have enough of those.
I love being me and I love being Dreamer. Hopefully, you, my friends and readers, know us both a little more. And in the coming year, perhaps we'll get to know even more of each other.
It's been a fun year.
Thanks for reading.

Knit 1, Purl 1
Dear Diary:
Years ago, on a family trip to British Columbia, my Mother taught me how to knit. It was a simple stitch I used to make a doll blanket. Over the years, I stopped knitting as none of my friends were able to knit. So, what a surprise when I read an article saying that knitting was "new" again.
Knitting is not just for grannies any more. The knit chicks are taking over. Yarn sales are up at the craft stores, while the Internet is helping with free patterns and chat rooms that give help and advice.
Expressing one's creativity is enticing people into trying knitting. The younger generation are looking for a creative outlet, that produces tangible items. Craft shows are displaying more hand knitted items, from mitts and scarves to afghans and clothing.
I've gone out to buy some wool and looked through the closet for my knitting needles. Anyone need a doll blanket?
Good Night for now.

International Women's Day
Dear Diary:
Today is International Women's Day and it has been observed as such since the early 1900's. But even today, women still do not receive equal pay to men; they are underrepresented in business and politics; our education and health cannot compare to men's and the rate of violence against women is still very high.
In Canada, two women stand out as activists for women's rights. Emily Stowe (1831-1903) was the first female doctor to practice in Canada, even though she was denied entrance to university because she was female. She became a teacher since that was "woman's work". She later went to a homeopathic medical school in the United States. She was an early suffragist and considered the "mother" of the movement in Canada.
Nellie McClung (1873-1951) was a member of "The Famous Five", a group that launched the "Persons Case", challenging the BNA Act, asking if women were considered "persons". The Supreme Court of Canada, in 1928, stated that women were not persons but that decision was overturned the next year. Because Nellie and her group brought up this question, it paved the way for women to be acknowledged and to be allowed to serve in Government.

Freedom to Read Week
Dear Diary:
Freedom to Read Week in Canada runs from Feb 26 to March 3. I always like to support this because censorship is such a personal decision and such a hot topic!
Here is a statement right from the website:
Freedom to read can never be taken for granted. Even in Canada, a free country by world standards, books and magazines are banned at the border. Schools and libraries are regularly asked to remove books and magazines from their shelves. Free expression on the Internet is under attack. Few of these stories make headlines, but they affect the right of Canadians to decide for themselves what they choose to read.
Through history, books have been banned or burned so the populace cannot or will not read them. Sometimes it's for religious or racial reasons, or it could be sexual explicitness or violence. Of Mice and Men (John Steinbeck) and To Kill a Mockingbird have been on almost every list since they've been written. Look at the list of the history of books that have been banned or burned.
The recent idea of re-writing Huckleberry Finn in order to eliminate words and social environment is descrediting Mark Twain. Is that not like re-writing history? I think one must consider the historical era surrounding the author's writing.
If you find the book, magazine or document offensive, then put it down and walk away. Should we not be able to choose what we wish to read ourselves?
In my opinion....
Good Night for now.

Today is Leap Day
Dear Diary:
Any year divisable by 4, gives us an extra day in February so today is it! It is Leap Day.
In some countries, it's a tradition that women may propose marriage on leap years. This doesn't seem such a bad idea but what if the guy you're proposing to refuses? It seems there are penalties for that.
In Scotland, fines were assigned to the man ranging from a kiss, to money, to a silk gown. In Denmark, a refusal may be compensated with the gift of 12 pairs of gloves, while in Finland, the man must buy the woman enough fabric to make a skirt.
In Greece, it's just unlucky to be married in a leap year.
Now where's my lucky man?

Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler!
Dear Diary:
Ah yes! Let the good times roll for Mardi Gras.
Mardi Gras has been celebrated since the early 18th Century in North America and was mentioned in the writings of French explorer, Pierre le Moyne as he and his crew explored the southern part of the United States.
Carnival season starts January 6th and culminates with Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday which leads into Lent.
In New Orleans, there are huge parades, where people dress up in costumes and often wear feathered masks. Trinkets and beads are thrown into the crowds. The traditional colours of Mardi Gras are purple, green and gold.
Mardi Gras is also celebrated in Rio de Janeiro and, a place I just found out about - Quebec City!! Imagine!!
Enjoy the day, since tomorrow we must start Lent!

In my Sweet Little Alice Blues
Dear Diary:
When I was a kid, my elderly next door neighbour, loved the Alice Blue Gown song from the musical, "Irene" that came out in the '30's. She would often sing it to me and dance me around the back yard. It was kind of a 1-2-3, 1-2-3, waltz beat so for this week, I thought of wearing something to make me look sweet, demure, innocent. Until I heard this rendition of the song:
I decided to at least keep the parasol.

Building Snowmen
Dear Diary:
When I was a kid, I just loved going out on a wintery day when the snow was really sticky and build snowmen with my friends. But lately, the weather in my part of the world has been very mild, a little snow, but definitely mild. One day it snowed so all of a sudden I had mushy / a-little-on-the-sticky-side snow. I definitely got the urge to build. I went outside to roll snow to make something creative but noticed my neighbours shoveling or sweeping so embarassment kept me from rolling the balls for the snowmen. All of a sudden I thought....wait...I can go to my other world...so I did.
I called up my friend, Chloe who is always game for doing something fun and we spent a great time outside on a picture perfect day.
Good Night for now.

Boxing Day Clean-up
Dear Diary:
Yesterday was Boxing Day in Canada - a nice day off for me. Usually on this day, people hit the stores to buy bags, paper, and bows for next year's presents. Some stores will also honour gift cards while others will allow returns of the 4th red sweater you got. I did none of the above. It was my time to clean up from Christmas Day.
It always amazes me how much trash is accumulated on one day. You spend hours taking care to wrap the gift for Aunt Joan in silver paper with the red and green tinsel ribbon; hours wrapping John's train track in Santa paper so he doesn't know what it is; and hours wrapping the tiny tiny earrings for Susan so that she won't throw them away by accident. And when those hours have gone by, they all unwrap their presents in SECONDS!!!
I try to be environmentally aware so I always separate the paper, the food containers and the rest of the garbage. But you can't put the Christmas paper in with the other paper. It has to go into the garbage. ERGGGHHHH!!! Who would have thought my holiday would be spent with the trash?
Good Night for now.

Dear Diary:
No matter how you say it, or what language it comes in, or whether you celebrate this season at all, the message is the same. It is the season of thankfulness, celebration, and joy. It is the season to be aware of how truly we value our friends and family.
I would like to wish everyone of you the happiest of holidays. May peace and kindness be your foremost thought and may those thoughts be passed on to all you love.
To the joy of the season.
A very Merry Christmas to you all.

My Christmas baking
Dear Diary:
When the calendar turns to December, members of my family expect that I should become "Baker of the Year". Unfortunately I'm not that good but at Christmas there are a few traditional sweet things that just have to be baked.
My Grandmother used to make Scottish shortbread. You know, the kind you almost break your teeth on? I make that but not quite so hard. Then there are the rum balls that my Dad enjoyed. Yep, those have to be mixed and rolled [and of course tasted] for sure. Oh yeah and then there's the New York special that my cousin likes. It's so sweet it makes me shudder but it keeps him happy for the season. Last but not least, are the mincemeat tarts. Those are served after Christmas dinner, warmed up with a dollop of ice cream. Now those are yummy.
I really do wish I could whip up gourmet delights like some of my friends can but I do enjoy accomplishing the few things I can.
Now when it comes to the turkey - I'm Cordon Bleu at best!
Good Night for now.

I love Coming Home!
Dear Diary:
Well, I returned safely from my trip but somehow managed to come back with a lot more than I went with. I sure added to the economy of the country on this trip.
After I retrieved my car from the airport parking lot, brushed off the snow, struggled getting suitcases in the car, I was tired! How did I manage to accumulate so much in such a short time? Did I really need to buy that second pair of boots? And the jacket. Does every closet need more plaid? Will I really wear that satin beaded cocktail dress? Of course, the answer to these is a definite YES!
It's always nice to travel but it sure is nice to get home. Now I just have to find a place for everything.
Good Night for now.
