The Bronze Age

Dear Diary:

The Bronze Age was a period of history where bronze technology was introduced in many areas of the world but maybe not all at the same time.  Tin had to be mined and melted, then added to molten copper.  This era used many metals.

One of the best developments, though, was the occurence of writing, which ultimately is allowing me to do my part for the 52 week colour challenge.

Is this the reason for Labour Day?

Dear Diary:

Tomorrow is Labour Day.  In Canada we always celebrate this day on the first Monday in September and have done so since the 1880's.  I usually get together with friends today for a BBQ, potato salad, roasted marshmallows and of course, fireworks.  If the weather is good, we'll go swimming or out in the boat.  It's a great time to have fun while the good weather lasts.

Of course we should remember the reason we have this long weekend.  It was established to recognize the contribution that ordinary working people have made to our way of life.

However, when I turned on the news this morning, what was the Labour Day discussion on a major television network?  It was how after tomorrow it's not "in fashion" to wear white.  Hmmm...guess that's why I decided to iron all my coloured stuff so I'll be ready for tomorrow.

Thinking about the summer

Dear Diary:

Ahhh...it is September 1st so I hauled out my thinking chair to go over the past few months of summer.  I know, I know, I know.  There are still many days of warm weather left but let's face it - the really hot days have already passed us by.

I had a wonderful summer.  I ride a bike (as in motorcycle) so when I managed to get some vacation, I went off into the country whenever I could.  There's something about getting away from the concrete and construction and going to fresh greeness and bright flowers.  I love "touching base with my roots" as they say.

I must admit, I like getting back to the fall - cool nights, warm days, routine.  There's something comfortable about that.  But my summer - yes, my summer - I do become a different person.

OMG!!! It's LIVER!!!

Dear Diary:

 

I'm not sure why the word, the thought of, or the look of LIVER brought out the aggressiveness in my nature but it did.  ~~Shudder~~  As a tall and skinny kid, my parents were told to "beef me up" and a sure way to do it, was by feeding me liver.  My Mother had some wild and wonderful ways of trying to disguise it but the smell of it cooking was a sure give-away.

Dear Diary:

I was reading the ICON Lifestyle magazine and noticed the article about DJs and the songs they love to play.  I suddenly thought of songs I love to listen to over and over again. 

One of my favs right now is "These Days" by the Foo Fighters, an alternative rock band formed in 1994.  This song is from their current collection, Wasting Light and I think one of the best on the albumn.

Dear Diary:

Ahhh yes.  The "dog days" of summer are upon us.  Generally these days are the hottest of the summer season and that's exactly what's happening in my part of the country. 

In the northern hemisphere, the days fall between early July and early September. They were given this name in early times as it was believed that Sirius, the Dog Star, came too close to the sun causing hot weather.  It was also thought that it was an evil time, as a quote from Clavis Calendarium (Brody) states "when the seas boiled, wine turned sour, Quinto raged in anger, dogs grew mad, and all creatures became languid, causing to man burning fevers, hysterics, and phrensies".

But luckily that isn't even a consideration now and in this beautiful weather I wanted to go to the beach one last time so I persuaded my good friend, Chloe to join me.

It was a great afternoon and one we'll remember during the freezing days of January.

I love all my worlds.  I work in each of them; I visit interesting places in both; and, I maintain a wonderful group of friends.  But I think we all love this world because it's glamourous.  We can dress in the fanciest clothes, have the neatest coiffure, apply  flawless makeup and drape ourselves in various jewels.  

However, sometimes real life seeps into this other world and tells us to ...ummm..."GET A LIFE!!"  When that happens, we get slapped with a wash cloth of reality and know we have to do in our second world, what we do in our perfect world.  So...

Amazing Apricot

Dear Diary:

I didn't know that apricots have to be picked when ripe and eaten fairly soon after that or they go bad. 

I didn't know you couldn't store them unless they were dried.

I didn't know that the Italian liqueur, Amaretto, gets its flavour from the kernel of the apricot and not almonds.  Go figure!

How about an official Canadian cake?

Dear Diary:

A few months back I blogged about Canada getting an official tartan ["Canada's Official Tartan - April 7, 2011].  Well, now someone has proposed we have a national cake - strawberry shortcake!  This would not be the typical biscuit variety.  It would be a white cake, topped with fresh strawberries and iced with whipped cream. 

Looking through the window of my greenhouse, you can see me picking the strawberries off a plant in a container but in Canada, strawberries grow wild in almost every province, making them a perfect choice for an official cake.  When you put them on top of a white cake, with whipped cream, you have Canada's colours in full display.  Using it for Canada's birthday cake, you could outline the Canadian flag in strawberries.  How supremely yummy would that be?

I'm for this cake...well, actually I'm for any cake.  I going to take this plate of strawberries and try making the cake right now.

A new computer is a wondrous thing

Dear Diary:

Ahhh yes!  After talking to friends, stalking the computer stores, reading countless Consumer Reports, accompanied by a lot of anxiety, I did buy a new desktop computer.  Armed with my bit of plastic, I cha-chinged my way home.  However, it sat in the box for 3 weeks [My old computer was like a comfortable slipper] but 3 days ago I decided it was time to move ahead.

 I've set up computers before. I use them at work so I was prepared for the steps I needed to take to get this new one operable.  "Nooo problem", I thought.  Getting it out of the box seemed to be the hard part - so much for the "green" packaging.  Right.  Disconnect the old; connect the new.  Ooops!  Where do I attach the VGA cord?  Back to the store.  Oh...ok...that's what this adapter is for.  Gotcha!  Home again.  All connected now.  Hmmm....colour is just green and blue.  Change cords.  Nope.  Back to the store.  Will you test this adapter please?  It's good?  Right.  Home again. Connect the monitor to my old computer.  Working fine.  Back to the store.  What can I do now?  Try the DVI cord? Sure.  Home again.  Still green and blue.  Alrighty!  Back to the store WITH the computer.  PLEASE TEST IT HERE [am thinking I'm an idiot].  AHA!!!  So it's NOT me!  Video card is not co-operating.  HURRAY!!!!  I'm vindicated.  Home again with a brand new hard drive.

July 2011 is supposed to be lucky

Dear Diary:

I was sitting at my dining room table yesterday checking out my schedule on the calendar, when I realized it was almost the end of July.  It brought to mind an email I got several months ago, announcing that July would be a special month due to the fact it had 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays.  Since this would not happen for another 823 years, I should pass the message on and then would receive good luck along with a great deal of money.

Well, that is certainly one of those urban legends that circulates around and around and the email is still coming to me citing the impending influx of fortune to those who pass it on.  But in reality, it happens when any month containing 31 days, has the first fall on a Friday.  It often occurs once a year.

Next year, January and July will have the same five day repeat, only with Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.  Two months in one year should be REALLY lucky!

A Visit from the Royals

Dear Diary:

I must admit I'm a royalist.  I very much liked the hype that went on in Canada with the visit by the newlyweds, Will and Kate [although I heard that protocol says we should now refer to her as Catherine].  The whirlwind trip across Canada was covered in detail by every newspaper, magazine and media group.  The royal couple won accolades for what was termed "chucking out the rules and setting a new course".

As written in the latest issue of Maclean's (July 25, 2011), the royal couple threw out the ritual and pomp.  No bowing or curtsying for them.  They participated in sports (dragon boat racing, street hockey); changed the schedule (visited Slave Lake, Alta on the spur of the moment); and spent time at every stop shaking hands and chit-chatting with the crowd.  They were perceived as just being "everyday people".  Both Will and Kate brought a relaxed, down to earth view for the future.

I always wanted to be the presenter of a flower bouquet to the Duchess.  I think I'm a little to old now to do that...but I guess I can fantasize.

Time to go on vacation

Dear Diary:

The other day I saw a trivia question that read, "Where did the bikini get its name?"  "Oh I know that one", I thought.  I was sure it was Brigitte Bardot.  I remember my Grandmother talking about her wearing a very skimpy bathing suit - the bikini.  But I was wrong.  It was designed long before Bardot wore one.

The bikini creator, Louis Reard, officially introduced the swimsuit in 1946.  He named it after Bikini Island, a place in the South Pacific where the US conducted atomic bomb testing.  He thought the bathing suit would cause a similar "explosive" reaction...and it did!  Check out this article in Time.com and see the Top 10 Bikinis in Pop Culture

I'm going on vacation for a week so decided I would put on my bikini, find a great island and work on my tan.  On this island, you can even rent a surf board and ride the waves.

Since it's a long weekend for me, I'm going away to stay with some friends at their cottage.  I do this every year and it's always a lot of fun.  There's the traditional bonfire, roasted wieners with all the accompaniments, potato salad, and of course the toasted marshmallows [the best part].

I hope everyone in Canada has a wonderful Canada Day tomorrow.  Please have a safe but happy holiday and return without harm.

At the same time, I would like to wish all my American friends a happy July 4th.  I know they will be celebrating just as much as we will be.
