What A Way To Cool Down!

It's been a hot few weeks in my part of the world.  The heat is enjoyable after experiencing the cold winters but after awhile, the 38C temp starts to wear you down.  You really need to get cool ...and fast.  That was easy enough to do in my 2nd world.

Happy Canada Day 2020

Dear Diary:

Well, this year is definitely different than other Canada Days.  I will be getting together with family (restricted to 10 people max) (we're 3 people over!) but not the large group of friends I've had other years.  I've got a Canadian menu planned so at least everyone can enjoy the food.  Fireworks are on for later this evening.

A Way Of Keeping In Touch

Dear Diary:

Slowly the constraints are being lifted.  We're able to be with our family and friends and it's so nice to see them in person.  It's been a time where the only way one could "see" friends was through a video conferencing program.  There are several programs that are free to use.  It's easy to use and it keeps loved ones close.  It works well but it still isn't the same as seeing friends for "real".  

Hopefully everything will pass and we can have get-togethers again.

Can You Take A Bird For A Walk?

Dear Diary:

During this time of being stuck at home, many people are turning to pets.  I love dogs and have a spaniel.  I would foster a dog, as a lot are doing for companionship but my house is full right now.  However, some people have allergies to pet hair or maybe they would prefer a pet that doesn't require a lot of "mothering".  A bird is a perfect choice.

Since the blue and gold macaw is one who easily learns phrases, I'm trying to teach mine a few.  I'm not having a lot of luck yet.  He just whistles!

Exercising Is Good For The Body And Mind

Dear Diary:

At this traumatic time, it's good to keep active.  I try to exercise regularly at home but sometimes it seems like a chore.  Whenever I can, I take a run outdoors, even in my second life.

Early morning works best for me.  A bit of exercise, a warm shower and I'm set for the day.

The sun is just coming up; it's crisp but not cold; and I'm enjoying being out of the house.

Where Are You For Towel Day 2020?

Dear Diary:

It's May 25th, and as you know it's Towel Day, in celebration of Douglas Adams.  The "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" is one of his better known books, and references a towel.  A towel it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have, partly because it has great practical value.

So I put on my towel and this year tried the golf club for a place to wear it.  I know it's not proper attire for playing golf but no one else was on the course so I did a quick putt.  I'm terrible at playing golf so I'm not sure what to do with this shot.

Don't panic and carry a towel (if you don't have one to wear!)

Pass The Time With Reading

Dear Diary:

How do you pass the time at home when it's difficult to be out and about?  There are several ways and I think I've tried them all.  

Reading is a suggestion that my friends have made so I did take that up.  I've read some really good books that will go on my "recommendations-by-friends list" to get more titles.  And I've read some that are non-readable in my opinion.  If I start a book I make sure I finish it - even if it's a painful process.

I love the title of this book and I'm taking ideas from it.

How Great To Have Breakfast In Bed

Dear Diary:

Yesterday, Sunday morning, I decided I would have a relaxing breakfast so I decided a perfect place to be is in bed.  How decadent...and how peaceful (at least I thought) 
So before I heard the eager sound of foot steps, I got my coffee and toast and headed back to bed.

It works well if I eat quickly.  I think I should do this again...soon!

Grocery Shopping Takes A Little Longer Now

Dear Diary:

I don't go to a lot of places these days but grocery shopping does take priority.  At first I found people to be considerate, polite but now everyone is starting to get a little testy!  I think were all getting tired of being inside.

Grocery places have phone-in orders with delivery or you can line up outside until you can enter and follow the arrows on the floor.  Some people ignore the arrows.  But we all try to keep the 2m distancing.

It seems like everyone heads for the ice cream when you need to indulge in something satisfying.

It's A Sign Of The Times

Dear Diary:

I've been absent for a few weeks.  I'm trying to get elderly relatives and jittery neighbours settled during this time of unrest.  It's a hard time for everyone.  The older people are anxious and worried while the Generations X and Y don't seem too upset at all.  The young children have another perspective altogether.  They can't understand why visits to the grandparents have been stopped.  It's always fun to go to Grandma's house.

The news reports are not uplifting either.  The Virus is taking it's time and wreaking havoc before it decides to pull out.  Difficult times around the world.

However we should all pay attention to what the doctors have told us:

• practice social distancing
• stay at home as much as possible
• wash your hands often

International Women's Day 2020

Dear Diary:

Today is International Women's Day.  While women have come a long way towards equality, some things still need to be accomplished.  Many women in the world are not able to do the every day things that Western women can do.  We need to look to gaining more power for those women.  

Equity in job situations is still an issue.  Equal pay for equal work is a great motto if it works.  Promotion at work should be given because of ability not gender.

The theme for this year is #GenerationEquality combined with UN Women's new multigenerational campaign.

Writer's Block Can Happen At Any Time

Dear Diary:

I love doing this blog!  It's fun and keeps the brain cells active.  As I've said in the past, I do it mostly for myself but do appreciate anyone else who takes the time to read it.  Many thanks for that.  

But sometimes the thoughts and ideas for writing don't come easily or quickly.  Sometimes I struggle with --- "What topic should I pick this time?"  "Where should I fly in order to get a great location?"  "How can I get a good picture that portrays my idea?"  Oh yes!!  I do have days like that.

It is frustrating trying to produce an article when ideas just won't come to mind.  Eventually they do.  But in the meantime, paper airplanes help.

Yoga Is My New Go-To Exercise

Dear Diary:

Yes, I'm really on this exercise kick but yesterday I tried something for the body and mind.  I went to a yoga studio to try some techniques and found it both exhilarating and peaceful at the same time.

In my first world, I find yoga difficult but I seem to have no problem holding the poses in my second life.

Dear Diary:

I must be on an exercise kick.  First the boxing and now skating.  When Sam asked if I wanted to go, I said, "Of course!"  I love skating.  I thought it would be at an indoor rink where it's reasonably warm but - no - Sam wanted to try a frozen pond.  I was ok with that.  

The weather cooperated and it was a wonderful way to spend the afternoon.  Somehow Sam's tricks didn't work out that well.

Working Off The Pounds

Dear Diary:

Now that the holiday season has passed, I need to think of getting back to normality.  All that heavy eating and eggnog drinking seems to have made my jeans fit a little tighter than they were before.  Exercise could be the answer.

A friend told me that taking up boxing was the key.  It's a great cardio workout and keeps that brain tuned.  I thought I could give it a try.

She was right.  It's a tremendous workout.  I came home tired (and a little bruised) but feeling good.  And it certainly got rid of all the problems of the day.
