Dear Diary:
March 16th marks the day for celebrating the remarkable feats of St. Urho. It is reported that Urho used his loud voice to chase the grasshoppers out of Finland to protect the grape harvest. He used the phrase, "Heinäsirkka, heinäsirkka, mene täältä hiiteen" (roughly translated: "Grasshopper, grasshopper, go to Hell!"). Now this was supposed to take place in pre-Ice Age Finland when the climate was warmer so Finland would have vineyards.
The celebrated colours are purple and green so I put on my bikini and took myself to a Finnish sauna to sweat it out and to honour St. Urho.
So, now I must tell you that there was no such person as St. Urho. The story of St. Urho, was fabricated by Richard Mattson from Virginia, Minnesota in the mid '50's. He made up the story because a coworker teased him about Finland not having a hero like St. Patrick of Ireland who cast out the snakes. Although originating as a joke in a small community of northern United States, St. Urho celebrations have spread internationally.
At the St. Urho feast, the dish is usually lihamojakka, a beef stew, so if you plan on celebrating, the recipe can be found Here.
Good Night for now.
