Bringing in 2012!

Dear Diary:

Joey Adams said, "May all your troubles last as long as your New Year's resolutions!"

I would like to wish that for everyone in the coming year.  My hope for all of you is that 2012 brings you happiness and health and that we all can have a peaceful and prosperous existence in all worlds.

Good Night for now.

Boxing Day Clean-up

Dear Diary:

Yesterday was Boxing Day in Canada - a nice day off for me.  Usually on this day, people hit the stores to buy bags, paper, and bows for next year's presents.  Some stores will also honour gift cards while others will allow returns of the 4th red sweater you got.  I did none of the above.  It was my time to clean up from Christmas Day.
It always amazes me how much trash is accumulated on one day.  You spend hours taking care to wrap the gift for Aunt Joan in silver paper with the red and green tinsel ribbon; hours wrapping John's train track in Santa paper so he doesn't know what it is; and hours wrapping the tiny tiny earrings for Susan so that she won't throw them away by accident.  And when those hours have gone by, they all unwrap their presents in SECONDS!!!

I try to be environmentally aware so I always separate the paper, the food containers and the rest of the garbage.  But you can't put the Christmas paper in with the other paper.  It has to go into the garbage.  ERGGGHHHH!!!  Who would have thought my holiday would be spent with the trash?

Good Night for now.

Dear Diary:

No matter how you say it, or what language it comes in, or whether you celebrate this season at all, the message is the same.  It is the season of thankfulness, celebration, and joy.  It is the season to be aware of how truly we value our friends and family.

I would like to wish everyone of you the happiest of holidays.  May peace and kindness be your foremost thought and may those thoughts be passed on to all you love.

To the joy of the season.

Sometimes I Deliver Presents

Dear Diary:

I don't normally need to deliver a lot of presents in my first world.  I visit friends on Christmas Eve and take their gifts over with me but most of my presents for family I leave under my tree.  Then everyone comes on Christmas Day for pressies and turkey.  But the few I do deliver provides a lot of fun.
Ah yes.  I've gone off the road a few times; had car trouble once; flat tire at least once and of course had many anxiety attacks along the way.  This year will be different.  We don't have a lot of snow so I don't think I'll run into the usual problems.  Wow...do you think things could run that smoothly?  Let's hope so.

My Christmas baking

Dear Diary:

When the calendar turns to December, members of my family expect that I should become "Baker of the Year". Unfortunately I'm not that good but at Christmas there are a few traditional sweet things that just have to be baked.

My Grandmother used to make Scottish shortbread. You know, the kind you almost break your teeth on? I make that but not quite so hard. Then there are the rum balls that my Dad enjoyed. Yep, those have to be mixed and rolled [and of course tasted] for sure. Oh yeah and then there's the New York special that my cousin likes. It's so sweet it makes me shudder but it keeps him happy for the season. Last but not least, are the mincemeat tarts. Those are served after Christmas dinner, warmed up with a dollop of ice cream. Now those are yummy.
I really do wish I could whip up gourmet delights like some of my friends can but I do enjoy accomplishing the few things I can.

Now when it comes to the turkey - I'm Cordon Bleu at best!

My Christmas tree is up!

Dear Diary:

I always feel the Christmas season has started once I get my Christmas tree up.  I'm a tradionalist in many ways but particularly at this time of year.  I have a live tree in my living room.  I'm also an environmentalist but I feel live trees do contribute in many ways to keeping the use of plastic to a minimum.  The decorations I have on my tree, have come from grandparents, parents, and just my collections.  I love decorating but it does take me a long time.

Wouldn't it be nice if putting up a tree in our first world could be as quick, as easy and as perfect as in our second world?  I asked my friend, Eric, to help me put the star on this very contemporary metal tree.
We had a lot of fun doing it.  Unfortunately, he couldn't really see at all.

"The Nutcracker"

Dear Diary:

It's been a tradition in my family to go as a group before Christmas, to see the ballet, "The Nutcracker".  To me it's always been the "Christmas" ballet.  I've seen it so many times since I was a kid but still enjoy the costumes, the dancers, and the music.  Christmas of 2011 will follow tradition by everyone attending a performance.

Much to my surprise, I discovered this ballet is being performed in my second world by the Ballet Pixelle.  I was thrilled to be able to attend a performance last night.  It was so well performed and although the Company changes the story slightly, it was well worth seeing.  Here, as in my real world, costuming and dancing was so well done.

The Ballet Company has been performing "The Nutcracker" for five years and can be seen at the theatre until the end of December.  Performances are on Wednesdays at 2pm slt and again on Sundays at 5pm slt.  For information on the ballet company, look at their blog here and to attend a performance, the theatre address here.  It is certainly an experience you should see.

I like to Flip the Advent Calendar

Dear Diary:

I'm not much on the hunts that go on in my other world.  And it's not that I don't like to participate but I just don't have the patience or the perceptiveness to be searching for hours for a tiny package that's hidden in the rafters.  One thing I like to do, is fly to a few select stores and flip the appropriate day on the Advent Calendar.  Maybe it's because in my first world home, I have two Advent Calendars - one that shows the remaining days til Christmas and the other does the reverse, counting down by the date.  That way, when I panic seeing how many days left, I can calm down by looking at the other showing the actual date.  I know, I know...how intellectually deficient can I be.

I've found some great things when I open those decorated boxes each day,
and many thanks to the stores who provide me with these gifts.

I have a few more weeks to go and my closet is gradually getting full to the "can't close the door" stage.  I'll show you a few more soon.

Good Night for now.

Buying Presents can Boggle your Mind

Dear Diary:

Last night I decided to hit the mall and start to pick up a few presents for family and friends.  I love to shop - for myself of course - but when it comes to picking out for others, it sometimes gives me a major headache.
I always agonize over the people who are difficult to buy for.  There's the guy who only likes button-down, 100% cotton shirts; the teen who only wants brand name clothing; and, of course the person who doesn't like anything you buy.  I try to get those people out of the way first but it doesn't always work that way.  Sometimes I just have NO idea of what to get.  I imagine a gift certificate would work but somehow, to me, a wrapped up piece of plastic just doesn't seem to portray the Christmas gift!

Oh well...I've just begun my struggles.  Maybe I'll get a flash of brilliance tomorrow.

Good Night for now.

It's December! Let's start with the Lights

Dear Diary:

OK...as you know I'm a complete Christmas junkie!!  I start on the 1st of December.  I get out the Christmas decorations, the Christmas plates and of course, the Christmas lights.

I like to put up lights around the front of the house but last year I started doing the back too.  I wonder if my neighbours dislike the bright ambience spilling over into their patio doors or kitchen windows.  Bah!!  Humbug!!  It makes me happy.

There's a down side though, to my decorating enthusiasm - it's not the cold - it's not the snow - it's not the "non interior decorating" of my method - it's getting the lights untangled from last years' put-away.  Every year I plan on rolling them properly but I must be lacking in organizational skills.
So last Thursday night, after supper, I tackled the task of getting the lights on my trees in a rather semblance of a decorating masterpiece.  I managed to get some of it done and then finished the rest off last night.  I think it all looks awesome!!

Now I'm wondering what my electrical bill will jump up to.  Ehhhhh...I'll worry about that in February.

Good Night for now.

I love Coming Home!

Dear Diary:

Well, I returned safely from my trip but somehow managed to come back with a lot more than I went with.  I sure added to the economy of the country on this trip.
After I retrieved my car from the airport parking lot, brushed off the snow, struggled getting suitcases in the car, I was tired!  How did I manage to accumulate so much in such a short time?  Did I really need to buy that second pair of boots?  And the jacket.  Does every closet need more plaid?  Will I really wear that satin beaded cocktail dress?  Of course, the answer to these is a definite YES!

It's always nice to travel but it sure is nice to get home.  Now I just have to find a place for everything.

I Love Travelling...but I Hate it!

Dear Diary:

Yes, I'm on my way for a 10 day vacation.  I'm thrilled to be going but...I hate it too!  Does that make sense?

Getting to the airport is crazy enough as it is.  Drive there at least 1 1/2 hour before flight time.  Struggle getting the bags from the car, to the right terminal, and then standing in line to make sure my suitcases are the right weight and my purse is the right size.
Then I go through security.  I try to pack all the liquids in the bags I'm checking but I have forgotten occasionally and end up having to buy hair spray as soon as I land.  I have my passport handy and wait for my shoes and pocket contents to appear.  OK...by now I'm totally exhausted!  I'm anxious to get on the plane, sit back and enjoy the flight.

Oh-oh....did I remember to unplug the kettle???

The Worst about a Trip is the Packing!

Dear Diary:

At this time every year, I go to visit relatives for a short shopping extravaganza!  There's nothing like a shop fest to get the adrenalin flowing.  However, before I can even get the excitement blooming, I need to do the packing.  Believe me, that's the absolute worst part for me.
Will the weather be cold?  Then I'd better take extra sweaters.  What if it's warm?  Well t-shirts should do!  I could run into snow.  For sure pack the boots, mitts and hat.  It could be unseasonably warm.  Take everything out of the suitcases and start over.

I've ruled out fancy things since we don't really go out a lot.  Eating in is fine with me and after I've run around a couple of malls, I don't really feel like putting on the stilettos!

I shudder at the thought of packing.  I usually take way too much of everything and never enough of something.  I'll be filling and emptying the suitcases until it's time to leave for the airport.

Has the Occupy Movement run its course?

Dear Diary:

For the past few months, the Occupy movement has been in major cities around the world.  It even came to my city, smaller than Toronto or Vancouver.  I was surprised by the turn out of people we had.  It was small by numbers but very vocal.
It now seems that the whole idea behind the initial project has been forgotten.  Some of the participants have been violent and causing damage.  Others have been termed "squatters" since they have almost set up a home.   Most cities want the protesters to move on and there has been major resistance on the part of the activists to do so.  Halifax is the latest city to want them to move on; Vancouver has already issued eviction notices while Toronto demonstrators are winterizing their tents.

Has the incentive behind this group been lost?  Have the idealists lost their motivation?  Interesting questions without answers.  It leaves us something to think about.

Rembrandt with an iPad?

Dear Diary:

I posted about Mathilde Vhargon, an exceptional digital artist in my second world last week, only to discover an article in a magazine about David Hockney, the first major art world figure to have a show featuring iPhone and iPad made pictures.
Using the Brushes application on the iPad, Hockney taught himself how to create digital drawings.  He hasn't sold any of these drawings but has had several exhibitions, one being featured at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto this fall.  There are a lot of critics who call digital paintings, "computer art" but Hockney states that the iPad can't teach you how to draw.  Hockney thinks that if Rembrandt were alive today, he would be using the iPad, since Rembrandt completed his paintings quickly and the iPad provides this.

I found this article interesting since we have some excellent digital artists in our world.  Perhaps they're paving the way for real life artists.

It's that time of year again, to turn our clocks back one hour to signify the end of Daylight Savings Time.  Last year I forgot and woke up at my usual time to realize that I could have slept another hour.  This year I turned my clocks back early Saturday night to make sure I remembered BUT I still didn't sleep in.

A Talented Digital Artist

Dear Diary:

I've written before about Mathilde Vhargon, a very talented digital artist in two previous posts [Beautiful Remedies and Mathilde Vhargon, Digital Artisti] and last Saturday, I was privileged to attend her latest artistic voyage at Studio 33 Art Gallery
Mathilde is a resident artist at Studio 33 and is owner of Two Shores Gallery of Fine Art.  A quote from her notecard talks about the "Decadent" theme of her show:

Beginning with 'Grand Entrance' which suggested the Decadent theme, my nearly monochromatic colour palette proved both restrictive and evocative--particularly when daggers and smile shapes appeared in the fractal, suggesting a line from Shakespeare's Macbeth, "There's daggers in men's smiles", so consistent with the Decadent theme!
I think this is her best work yet.  Here are some of my favourites from her show.

Her exhibit runs until November 18th.

It Ends with Orange!

Dear Diary:

Well, the 52 Week Colour Challenge has come down to #52.  I was really feeling down...sad...upset because I enjoyed doing this so much.  I loved reading the great blogs of the participants; the photos were phenomenal; the colour offerings innovative and the challenge WAS challenging.  But just before writing this, I happened to come upon this quote:

Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened. ~Theodor [Dr. Seuss] Geisel

and it got me thinking about some of the colours I was presented with.  Who's heard of "wenge"?  Patriarch is a colour?  Then there was the series that resembled a grocery list - asparagus, lemon, eggplant, banana, tangerine, melon, apricot, cream, electric lime and the dreaded LIVER! Looking fiercely for the different hues of red and trying to come close to matching the colour swatches.  And as I was remembering my furious searches through the weeks, I realized I was smiling.  What a great year this was!  Every Saturday morning, I would look at Luna's blog to find out what challenge I was about to meet this week.  Each week it was so much fun to write this blog.

Thanks to Luna for the organization, perseverance and the encouragement to keep all of us bloggers on schedule.  Thanks to all the bloggers involved for the information, suggestions, and comments over the past year too.  And a big congrats to those that managed all 52!!  I'll be patiently waiting for January 1st to be starting this all over again.

And so - it ends with orange.

Thinking of Today - Dress for the cause

Dear Diary:

This is my Thinking Day and the only time you won't see me in black when I think.  Today is Dress for the Cause and everyone is encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer.

This past year I lost a very good friend in my second life.  She had cancer and was strong to the end.  It touched me deeply and I wrote about it in "Thinking about Friendship .  I have a real life friend going through her second bout of breast cancer. I have seen what she has gone through with the surgery, chemotherapy and radiation.  I have been there with her and I don't want any of the other women I know to have to deal with that.  And, in addition to the physical issues, there is the emotional ravage to herself and to her family.  I'm not sure how one can handle all that and be left with sanity.

To all the marvelous and strong women who are in my life, who I've met through my vitual world, who read this blog, who are out there in Canada, Europe, Asia or beyond, please practice self examination, get your mammograms when you should, and see your doctor.  I don't want to lose anyone else in any world.

Yucky cellphones

Dear Diary:

I was reading the newspaper the other day when a headline caught my eye, concerning dirty cellphones.  Over 92% of the phones had some type of bacteria on them.  It also found that 16% of the same 390 cell phones tested, were found to carry E. coli.

I guess we always knew that computer lab key boards were a refrigerator full of germs but I never thought of my cell phone having bacteria on it.  I'm the only one who uses it BUT I do throw it in my purse, place it on a publc table, or even put in my pocket.  I wash my hands well but the article stated that wet hands can spread the bugs easier than with dry ones.  From now on I'll extra dry too.

So is there any other solution to keeping our cell phones clean?  I know you can swab keyboards with a cleaner.  Maybe we'll have to do that with our cell phones too.

Update on Thanksgiving post

Dear Diary:

Now that Thanksgiving has passed and I'm busily working off all the turkey, gravy, stuffing and pumpkin pie [with whipped cream of course!], I wanted to go back and give well deserved credit to the creator of the furniture in my Thanksgiving picture.
The dining room table, seating 6, is French Pine Cabriole.  It comes with two head table chairs, with arms, and 4 side chairs.  In the table menu, are centrepieces, a meal and dessert.  This fall centrepiece and runner, with colour and texture changing abilities, is extra but it's very easy to add to the menu.

The gorgeous dining room suite, the centrepiece and the rug are all creations of Pamela Galli, the very talented owner of La Galleria.  Pamela pays a great deal of attention to detail.  Her furniture and accessories, as well as her fabulous homes, have wonderful textures and colours, and cover all areas of interior design, from contemporary to traditional.  All are displayed in her store.  I love walking through the store even just to window shop.  She is always coming up with new items that make a home really a home.  Such a talented business woman!

Check out Pamela's fabulous items at La Galleria or on her blog, which highlights great designs of her homes, new items in her store, and tips on modification and tinting.

Good Night for now.

Happy Thanksgiving Canada!

Dear Diary:

Today is Thanksgiving Day in Canada.  We have so much in life to be thankful for on this beautiful fall day, with all the leaves turning colour and making every view a kaleidoscope of fall shades.

Enjoy your dinner with friends.  It's a time to catch up with family too.
Whether your turkey day was Saturday, Sunday or today, or if you ate beef instead of turkey, it doesn't matter when you have good company.  I want to wish all my fellow Canadians a happy Thanksgiving Day.  May all your days be this colourful.

Good Night for now.

Wenge

Dear Diary:

When I checked online to see how this colour got its name, I realized the big discussion was how to pronounce the word.  Some dictionaries said it was "when-gee" [with a hard g sound]; others said it was "wen-gay"; and still another mentioned it was "wenge" [like revenge].  This is worse than "ka-ki" / "kar-ki"!!
Good Night for now.

Yaahhh - I'm a Beer Baby!!

Dear Diary:

Recently I read that beer sales in Britain have been declining rapidly, causing many pubs to also close.  Molson Coors Brewing Co. have come up with the solution of appealing to women with 3 new beer flavours - clear filtered; crisp rose or zesty lemon - called Animee.  Danish brewer, Carlsberg, also has a new beer called Eve, with different flavours for women.

But in Canada?  HA!!  Those beer drinking, resilient Canadian women account for 40% of beer sales.    I think the stereotypical thought of what a beer drinker should look like has gone out the window since women enjoy the beverage too.  Now women are drinking beer as their beverage of choice, even in the fanciest of places.  Beer is not just for hot-dogs-over-the-fire-night any more.

You go girls!!!  I'm with ya all the way.

Good Night for now.

Moss Green

Dear Diary:
Moss green is such a pretty shade.  It reminds me of Fall so I dressed accordingly for my part of the world.  I don't think I got Luna's swatch down pat.  However, this is my take!!

"There are approximately 12,000 species of moss classified in the Bryophyta.  The divison Bryophyta formerly included not only mosses, but also liverworts and hornworts." (Wikipedia)  Wow...thank goodness Luna didn't pick one of those for a colour name!  I'd really be in trouble!

Good Night for now.
