Happy 144th Birthday Canada!

Dear Diary:

Since it's a long weekend for me, I'm going away to stay with some friends at their cottage.  I do this every year and it's always a lot of fun.  There's the traditional bonfire, roasted wieners with all the accompaniments, potato salad, and of course the toasted marshmallows [the best part].

I hope everyone in Canada has a wonderful Canada Day tomorrow.  Please have a safe but happy holiday and return without harm.

At the same time, I would like to wish all my American friends a happy July 4th.  I know they will be celebrating just as much as we will be.

I always wear this tee at this time of year.  I think it's such a great representation of two countries that are linked in so many ways.

Happy Holiday Everybody.

Good Night for now.

I love the 52 week colour challenge.  I think this was a great idea of Luna's.  And I'm glad some of the colours have different shade options since I don't think I've been hitting the colour swatch very closely these past few times. [looking for my glasses]

It's ALL About the Money

Dear Diary:

What won't melt in the dryer or harden in the winter?  Why it's the new plastic money that Canada will start producing this November.  The polymer bank notes will start replacing the paper-cotton bills that suffer wear and tear.  The new bills feel smoother to the touch and are much harder to crumble but will fold if pressed.  The new money will cost twice as much to produce as the old but the Bank of Canada expects that the new money will last 2 1/2 times longer.

Making the new bills this way will deter counterfeiters since they will have more security features such as metallic images in see-through windows.  Of course at a time when the ecology is most important, the money will also be recyclable.

The new bills will begin production with the $100.00 bill, followed by circulation of the $50.00 bill in March of 2012.  The remaining bills will be released by the end of 2013.

This picture brings a total decadence to my mind - a bath tub filled with money.  This paper money floats.  I wonder if the plastic will.

I Love to Spell - S-P-E-L-L!

Dear Diary:

I've always been a good speller, even from my elementary school days.  I check a dictionary, encyclopedia or thesaurus if I'm not sure of the spelling.  I run spell check on my computer.  But lately I've run into a couple of ...ummm...problems!

I've always been aware of some spelling differences for Canadian, American or British words, such as neighbour, theatre, axe, cheque, or programme but I've recently done two posts where my spelling has been put to the test.
Awhile back, I used the word "dilemna".  I used spell-check and the word came up incorrect.  I thought it was right so I checked the online dictionary and it showed a double m spelling.  I went to an online encyclopedia and it confirmed it as an "alternate spelling".  My hard copy of the dictionary listed it.  Wow!!  I was floored!!!  I had always been taught to spell it with an "n".  I cruised the internet and found a discussion board about this spelling and a lot of people were just as confused as I was.  So I thought, "It's just one of those oddities...I can live with it."  Well not too many weeks later when I posted about "fuschia", I was met with the same fate.  ERRRRGGGHHHH!!!  I went through the process all over again.  When did the word change to "fuchsia"?

The best advice I got was when I was in university, the professor said, "The important thing to remember is to be consistent in usage and to follow a regular pattern when you spell." So please forgive me for my small indiscretions in spelling - could be Canadian / American / British way / or just Dreamer way.

Good Night for now.

Mahogany

Dear Diary:

I had to think about what colour I wanted to show for mahogany.  Do I go for the brightness of the fresh cut board or do I wear something indicative of the colour of the processed furniture?  Hmmm...as if that's all I had to contemplate!!

So here's my choice of mahogany!!

Clackety-clack Goes the Typewriter

Dear Diary:

The other day I was flying from store to store looking at the sales and I picked up the cutest typewriter necklace from Caroline's Jewelry and that made me think about an article I read in the PC magazine a few months back.  It was about the last typewriter factory in India shutting down.  So I pushed the laptop to the side and brought the old machine out of the attic to type this article  - just for realism!
As my fingers started aching from the pounding, names like Remington, Underwood and Smith Corona ran through my head, brands that were familiar from hearing my great aunt talk about her secretarial experience and the ins-and-outs of each new addition to the office.  I gained a new respect thinking of those secretaries who expended so much time and effort to produce a document without the use of backspace / delete / spell check.

The article states that the factory in India was producing 50,000 typewriters in the '90s but with the popularity of computers gaining strength, and the decline of sales, they stopped production in 2009.  This will mean a big change for some Indian businesses.  However, the update is that an American company is still making portable models so perhaps the typewriter will not cease to exist just yet.
Will I keep the old Beauty on my work desk?  Naaawww...my laptop owns it now and besides, I'm not as skilled a typer as the women before me.

Read the article about the demise of the typewriter here and find out about the evolution of the typewriter here.  Very interesting to learn how our society still likes the "old" gadgets.

Jade brings good luck

Dear Diary:

Jade is one of those stones that come in a variety of colours but green definitely is the most popular.
Jade was being mined as far back as 6000 BC and has been found in historic sites in China, Mesoamerica and India.  It was often made into jewelry but carvings have also been located in ancient burials.  As well, today, Jade can be found in mines located in Canada, Burma and Russia.

This stone has often been thought to have many metaphysical properties.  It is said to give the wearer confidence, the ablility to sense the truth, the compassion to see the needs of others, and the possibility of a long and healthy life.  For centuries, it's been known as a good luck charm.  So...I'm not taking any chances...from now on I'll be wearing it, carrying it or mining it...whatever works!

Good Night for now.

Stressed? Trying Gardening

Dear Diary:

One thing I enjoy doing in any world is gardening.  I can get out and dig in the earth, plant some new flowers and the rest of the world seems to fade.  So when the temperature went up...I went out!

I have a flower bed just outside my house.  The Hydrangea is up, tulips are blooming, hosta is poking out of the earth and the Bleeding Heart is just getting leaves.  The fern seems to be nice and green.  Of course the weeds are doing best of all.
The weeding is always the part I hate the most but I know that it has to be done.
There's something so rewarding about sitting back and looking at what your hard work has produced [and it gives you time to have a quick rest].

These garden plants from Herb's Garden are wonderful because they "grow" with the season.  Each one is changeable to the varying seasons from spring right through to winter.  Right now they're just starting out but in another month they'll be flowering.

It was a great gardening day!

Denim 4 me...Me 4 Denim

Dear Diary:

OK...reveal time!!  This is ME!  I mean it.  Denim is ME!  When I found out what the colour choice was for the  52 week colour challenge, I knew that I would post ME!  This is what I look like in my world.  I put on my jeans as soon as I come from work, add a tee [green is my favourite colour] and today I added a cardigan since it was a little cool on this side of the grid.  I usually wear hoop-type earrings and a watch to let me know how behind I am.  Wash the face so, no makeup except for a little lip gloss, and hair usually looks like this after a day of work.  So now you know...it's out in the open....this is really ME!
Good Night for now.

Hockey week in Canada

Dear Diary:

Helloooo hockey fans - here in Canada and around the world.  The Stanley Cup is in full swing and the first game was this past Wednesday.  The Vancouver Canucks (often the bridesmaids) are playing the Boston Bruins (often the brides) but the Canucks are now one up.  I'm not really a Canucks fan (what happened to the Canadiens??) but since I'm a loyal and patriotic Canadian, I'm behind them.  Got my fingers, toes and everything else crossed they'll come out ahead.
Pretending to be a goalie!
Statistics say that the team who wins the first game will go on to win the series.  Data shows that the city who has hosted the Olympics goes on to win the Cup the next year, as in Montreal in 1976.  Others say that Vancouver will take it in 6.  Some say that Vancouver will always be the bridesmaid.

On top of that news, another hockey win took place this past week.  Winnipeg will get back an NHL team.  The Thrashers will move from Atlanta.  The question now is what will they be called.  It won't be the Thrashers...it probably won't be the Jets (former team name)...so what will it be?  The Manitoa Moose has been suggested and...ummm...errr.....NO!

It certainly was a "hockey week in Canada".

Good Night for now.
