December 27th...Is It Significant?

Dear Diary:

My title asks a question.  Is December 27th significant to me.  And the answer is....YOU BET IT IS!!!  It's important because this is the day I can truly have a relaxing day.  Christmas Day is hectic.  Opening presents, stuffing the turkey, cooking the turnip, mashing the potatoes, setting the table, serving everything while it's [hopefully] hot, getting the desserts out, making coffee, doing dishes and cleaning up, going to bed so tired I can hardly stand and feeling very happy and satisfied while I lie there with the covers pulled up to my chin.

Yesterday was Boxing Day here in Canada.  Usually on that day, I have friends over to have a late brunch, not with turkey but with appetizers and beef on a bun [hot beef roast served on a bun dipped into au jus].  And it's another day of all the above except no presents.  So today is a very significant day for me.  I get up early, sit in my jammies with a cup of coffee and think about what's happened the previous two days and recall memories of this time of year from years past.  It's definitely a stress free morning

What a super holiday it's been so far!!  A few more days off work and it will become outstanding.

Good Night for now.

Festive Eve for the Twisted Colour Challenge

Dear Diary:

When I saw the colour swatch for the Challenge, it brought back a lot of memories for me.  As a brand new resident several years ago, I was invited to a Christmas formal dance.  I had nothing in my closet that would do.  And faced with that, I went shopping of course.  So in celebration of the colour and season, I'm wearing my very first formal gown that I owned in my second world.

Tis the Season for Cutting the Christmas Tree

Dear Diary:

When I was a kid, my Dad and I would go out every year, about a week before Christmas, and cut down the best pine tree we could find.  We would drag it to the car and my Dad would put it on the roof and tie it down, sometimes not very securely, and make our way back home.  We would put it up that day and the smell of fresh evergreen would waft through the house.  Of course over the years, the short drive from our house got to be longer since the tree cutting area became a park and was off limits for cutting trees.  Then we had to go to a lot to buy a commercial tree but it was always fresh and sweet smelling.  We never did get an artificial tree.  Even now, as an adult, having my own home, I still buy a real tree to decorate and enjoy the childhood memories every time I put it up.

When the Christmas season is finished, I take my tree to a recycle location.  The tree is chipped and used again in another capacity.  I think that's taking responsibility for the environment and provides room for another tree next year.

Good Night for now.

Dear Diary:

In this second world of ours, there's a lot of terrific talent.  I've gone to concerts for singers, for comedians and just to hear the music.  Last night I went to a surprise concert to hear a high energy band in a wintery location.  It's always a good excuse to get dressed up and a fun way to get into the holiday spirit.

Relaxed Greenlands Meets Redstone Mountains

Dear Diary:

It's nice to see Sookie back to finish up The Twisted Colour Challenge.    Not a lot of weeks left.  I decided to combine the colours this week since both were kinda "greeny" and kinda "reddy", in order to get my Christmas fix.  I'm sure you've read in previous posts of my obsession with Christmas so I managed to assuage my need to show Christmas.

Almost all of the clothing and jewelry I'm wearing is either free or a very low cost, found at the stores or on Marketplace.  Nice bargains!

Tis the Season to Go Out Dancing

Dear Diary:

Usually I live in jeans and a tee (or sweater now that the weather is a bit chilly).  But sometimes it's nice to get all glammed up and go dancing.  The other night my friend Chloe rang me up and asked if I wanted to go out.  "But of course", I said.  So we both put on our latest and bestest hot dresses and managed to hit a lot of the hot spots in the area.  We ended up on the steps of Bogart's

We weren't dressed in formal gowns so we didn't go in but Bogart's is decorated for Christmas so it really got us into the spirit.

Both of us had sore feet at this point but it was such a fun night, we barely noticed.

Good Night for now.

The December Arcade

Dear Diary:

A few days ago I was finally able to get into the Arcade.  I thought I would get there, have a look around then go back to shop at another time.  Of course that's an impossibility for me.  So with L$ in my pocket I picked up a few things.  When I decided to go back this morning, I had to wait.  It provided a good opportunity to sit on the bench and takes some pictures.

I want to pick up more from Consignment.  There's some great looking fossils I'm anxious to get.

Tis the Season for The Nutcracker

Dear Diary:

I always enjoyed seeing the ballet, The Nutcracker, in my first life.  My family would always attend a production just before Christmas.  It was a tradition.  For the past two years, I've attended the ballet performance in my second life and have loved it!  It's extremely well done by Ballet Pixelle at the Royal Opera House of Second Life.  I was fortunate to be able to attend that production last Wednesday.  It was tremendous!

The ballet will be shown again on December 18th at 2pm slt.  Try to see it.  You'll thoroughly enjoy it.

Another upcoming event at the Royal Opera House is a Christmas show by Little Yoshiwara Geishas, December 15th, 1pm slt

This is a venue you'll like to come back to, time and time again.

The Winter Season Challenge

Dear Diary:

Berry has picked a very appropriate Meme for me...today...for the next week...for the next 4 months.  I just finished shovelling, came in, had my shower, had my breakfast, and the street plow came by.  Next thing I knew, the sidewalk plow came by.  So out I went AGAIN to shovel.  And the weatherman said more is on the way tonight!  I'm in a great mood to be doing this meme!!  Grrrrrr....

1. What is the December/Winter season like where you live? I live in Canada, the northern part of a province.  Enough said, eh?  We have snow for about 4 months (hopefully) but I've seen a few flurries in May.  Fortunately it doesn't stay.  The average daytime temperature right now is around -8C [about 17F] which is really nice.  In January it can hit -30C [about -22F].  There have been a few winters where we haven't had snow until mid January.  And then other years a few flurries have arrived late October. Should I say...unpredictable?

2. When you think of winter, what’s the first thing that pops into your head?  Hmmmm...first thing that pops into my head....boots, toque, mitts, parka, scarf, snow, shovelling, snow tires, car heater, frozen gas line, windshield scrapper, cold, wind, no sun, wind- burned skin, chapped lips, and I'm sure there are others I've mentally put on hold.

3. Have you ever played any extreme winter sports?  I'm not sure about "extreme" sports but everything done in our winter could be "extreme".  I downhill and cross country ski, I snow shoe and I've curled.  I try to go skating (indoor) fairly often and outdoor (on the lake) when it's frozen.

4. What do you like most about this season?   Alright.  To this point it's sounds like I've been complaining, whining, sounding like a grumbler.  So...being honest, this is my favourite time of year.  I like everything about the winter - the snow, the sports, and even the shovelling [if it isn't too cold].  I do get tired of the snow if it lasts into April but up until then, it definitely is my time of year.

5.Do you celebrate Christmas, Hannukkah, Kwanzaa or another holiday during this time of year? I celebrate Christmas and I can say that I'm a Christmas junkie.  I start decorating December 1st and keep everything up until Epiphany, January 6th, although it isn't for any religious reasons.  I have a real tree that I cover with ornaments I've collected or have had passed down to me.  I like the family involvement at this time of year so I always am cooking big meals.  I think I enjoy it because everyone seems to like each other, or tolerate each other, or maybe even love each other.  Group hug, group hug, group hug!!

Good Night for now.

Tis the Season to Get Ready

Dear Diary:

Ah yes...today marks the beginning of the month that fills me full of hope and excitement [in both worlds by the way] and the day I start to put out my Christmas decorations.  I found a great store, Botanica, that displayed wonderful holiday presentations so I decided to do some shopping.

On the pathway into the store, there are quite a few winter plants.  The one I was taken with was the holly bush, nice shiny leaves and bright red berries.

Follow the path along to....

the Christmas store.  There are many different Christmas trees on display.  Some are airy and fantasy-like and I must admit, I was very attracted to them.  They're named after capital cities in Europe.

Inside the Christmas store, you'll find a vast display of decorations.  There are wreaths, Christmas trees, decorative boxes and poinsettias.  A lot of these are mesh which makes it great for decorating.

No trip to a Christmas store would be complete without sitting on Santa's lap.  He welcomed me and asked if I had been a good girl this year.  Now is there any doubt about that??

I loved the look of the Light trees and picked one out to put on the roof of my home.  I came home with Warsaw.  You can resize them but I think it looks best in a larger size.  It definitely shows the "snowflakes" that make up the tree.

The season has started!  December will be fun for me.

Good Night for now.

Geek? Nerd? Or Dork?

Dear Diary:

Another thought provoking, very subjective Q&A for Berry's Monday Meme

1. What do you consider yourself to be? Geek? Nerd? Dork? None of the above? All of the above?  I always considered myself to be part Geek and part Dork and to this day think of myself as such.  As a kid, I had straight hair that my Mom had cut in a very dorky way; had "railway tracks" (braces) until I was 16; and wore truly ugly glasses (I'm cockeyed!)  I was more comfortable in a science lab than at a party. [ok, I've changed!] I've never lost my desire to learn as much as I can and sometimes those courses have nothing to do with my job.  I've got quirky tastes in my hobbies [am taking a class in Latin right now] but that's what keeps me interested.  Fortunately I have great friends who put up with me. [They shake their heads often!]

2. What was the first computer you ever owned?  Think it was a Commodore 64.  I didn't own it as such, but it was for the whole family to use.  It was really old and often didn't work very well.  Finally my Dad bought a newer one but I only used it to play a space game.

3. When and how did you first get on the internet?  Not sure exactly when it was but all my friends were talking about it so I needed to find out about it too.  I think it was probably for email.

4. Which geek fandom do you subscribe to?  Since I'm a Second Lifer, I guess that is part of my geekedness.  I do watch Dr Who whenever I get a chance.  Never got into Harry Potter.

5. Star Trek or Star Wars?  I probably lean to either but deep down I'm more of a Trekkie.

6. How Geeky Are You?   The test was fun to do.  I am 59% Geek so I guess that makes me 41% Dork!  I passed the link to several of my friends who think they're "normal".  We'll see what happens.

Shoetopia Shopping Spree

Dear Diary:

Finally, my friend Chloe and I managed to get into the very busy Shoetopia event.  The venue has been packed and we never seem to be able to enter the sim or even move once we got there.  We usually shop together and always have a lot of fun doing it.  When I say we shop, I mean we SHOP!  So we decided to split up and meet after for coffee.  We both bought lots of shoes and, the funny thing is we both bought some of the same shoes.

Just before we left, I decided to try the Gacha machines and was lucky enough to get this rare Rack prop pose.  It was perfect for Chloe and I.  It gave us a chance to wear some of our new shoes.

One more week for Shoetopia!  The crowds seem to have thinned a bit so it's a good chance to look at all the new items - everything from stilettos to boots.

An Introspection of My Life

Dear Diary:

Berry's Monday Meme is really hard to do this week.  It's difficult to analyze how you personally feel.

1. Regardless of your current number, how old do you actually feel?  Wow!  It seems simple but this is a difficult question for me.  Age has never meant much - chronological, biological or psychological - they all seem to be different at various times of life.  But I suppose I would have to say I feel like I'm in my 20's.

2. Which is worse, failing or never trying? Definitely never trying is worse.  You might fail at the trying, but at least you know you gave it a shot.

3. If the average human life span was 40 years, how would you live your life differently? I would never live my life differently even if I had all the time in the world.  My trials, my failures, my successes have made me the person I am and I wouldn't change that.

4. Are you more worried about doing things right, or doing the right things?  I think I worry more about "doing things right".  In my work, I'm a perfectionist and it's hard to change that line of thinking.  But, on the other hand, I do try and do the right things when it comes to family and friends.

5. Would you rather be a worried genius or a joyful simpleton? Couldn't I be a joyful genius?  My brain is important to me so "simpleton" wouldn't be me.

6. Have you been the kind of friend you want as a friend?  Yes.  I can honestly say, and with a great amount of humility, say that I make a very good friend.  My friends even tell me that.  My friends, in all of my lives, mean a great deal to me and I don't treat their trust in me lightly.  I cherish all of them, and value what they bring to the friendship.

7. Do you remember that time 5 years ago when you were extremely upset? Does it really matter now?  I can't remember the last time I was truly upset.  Things don't really bother me but if I do get upset, the feeling is gone within a few hours.  I tend not to hang on to things like that.
8. At what time in your recent past have you felt most passionate and alive?  This is going to sound really sappy.  Christmas is MY time.  I enjoy it from the beginning of December right til Epiphany.  I love the snowy weather, the colourful decorations, the real tree all decorated with ornaments that have meaning for me, the food and the company.  Everything about it makes me as excited as when I was a kid.
9. If you just won a million dollars, would you quit your job?  Absolutely not!  I love my job and no amount of money would convince me to quit.  The practical side of me realizes that, if I won the money, I would be able to take time off for lots of vacations.
10. If you knew that everyone you know was going to die tomorrow, who would you visit today? I couldn't name one person but I would try to gather my family and friends together and have one-heck-of-a-blow-out party.
11. What do you feel is the difference between being alive and truly living? Being alive is the process of "existing". Truly living is "existing" on steroids!
12. If we learn from our mistakes, why are we always so afraid to make a mistake?  I've made lots of mistakes in my lifetime.  I like to think most were unintentional.  Have I learned from that? I suppose so but I know I'll make more errors in my remaining years, but that's part of life.  I'm not afraid.
13. What would you do differently if you knew nobody would judge you?    Well, for a start, I would tell people I'm enjoying a Second Life!  None of my family or friends know I'm in this world.  Hmmm...what would they say?
14. If you could offer a newborn child only one piece of advice, what would it be?  Live life to the fullest, with no regrets.

OK...now I'm totally exhausted.

Good Night for now.

The Best and The Worst of It All

Dear Diary:

It's a bitter cold windy day here in the North.  I want to climb under the duvet, watch television and do nothing.  But of course, that can't be.  This morning I got up, started the car and drove to work with the heater on full blast.  Now that I'm home, I'm comfortable in my jammies...and warmer [*note* ear muffs, scarf and gloves]... answering Berry's Monday Meme.

1. Best thing about Second Life:  The wonderful people I've met.  I have made friendships that expand beyond Second Life.
Worst thing about Second Life:  The idiots that invade my personal space; grief me and ruin my sim.

2. Best thing in your inventory:  Clothes, shoes, hair, furniture, houses.  Oops!  Was I only supposed to name one thing?
Worst thing in your inventory:  Hmmm...I deleted a lot of the real tacky things I had.  I guess now it's the AK-47 Super push gun that knocks the intruder 2 sims away.  I hate to admit it, but I've used it too.

3. Best earliest SL memory:  Having parties on the top deck of the first house I rented.  It was so much fun dancing, talking and just acting crazy.
Worst earliest SL memory: Meeting a wonderful kind woman who became my friend, who went shopping and dancing with me and then who died.  At that point I realized RL does impact on SL and vice versa.

4. Best thing you learned because of SL:    Learning how to take photos - posing, focusing, shadows.  I'm still learning every time I take a picture but I enjoy it.
Worst thing you learned because of SL: Agree with Berry.  Some people will hide behind their SL persona and feel they can be as rude or as cruel as they want to be.  Makes me think they may be like this in RL too.

5. Best thing about blogging: Being able to express myself.  I always wanted to be a journalist, write a book so this is certainly the best thing I've done.  I've never blogged before but I found out I love it!
Worst thing about blogging:  I haven't found the worst thing yet.  I just love doing it.  I dislike hearing that some bloggers ask for a lot of freebies.  Then when they don't get the items, they bad mouth the store / designer.  Very rude!

6. Best thing to have with french toast: A Canadian morning
Worst thing to have with french toast:  A Canadian morning when you have to go out to scrape the windshield; try to open the frozen doors; turn on the heater; and wait until you can drive without feeling the tires are like rocks.  Forget it....by then your French Toast is cold.

My Celebrity Look Alike.

Dear Diary:

The Monday Meme certainly kept me on the computer for HOURS last night.  I took a selfie that I thought was nice looking and submitted it.

Try as I might [and I did try multiple times], it wouldn't accept it.

Hmmm...maybe it was the hair.  So back to my other world....

Change of hair.  Another selfie.  And submit.

Well cancel THAT!  Somehow I didn't think I looked like Nick Nolte!  I won't put that up for scrutiny on Berry's Meme.  So...*sigh*...back to that world again.

Change of hair.  Another selfie. And submit.
