Autumn has made it!

Dear Diary:

I really love the fall time.  At this time of year, I wake up in the morning and it's cool.  The sun hits the horizon and I often get frost on the windshield of my car.  But by the afternoon, the sun is out and the air is warm.  The leaves ate starting to turn different colours and it makes everything really bright and cheerful.
I often go for a walk on the nice days just to see the leaves fall from the trees and to hear them crunching under my feet.

I know soon all this colour will be replaced by plain white so I'm enjoying these wonderful days.

Good Night for now.

Ka-ki OR kar-ki? Same to me!

Dear Diary:

The latest colour for the 52 week challenge is khaki.  I really like this colour and it was easy finding something that I felt fit the colour.  But the hard part is the pronunciation!  Is it Ka-ki?  Or is it kar-ki?  Everybody I talked to had their own opinions but whatever way you say it, it still means the same to me.
Good Night for now.

The "No Smoking" Sign is up

Dear Diary:
When I was young, I thought that being a stewardess would be an awesome job.  You can fly anywhere in the world; have a job that's essentially different every day; and don't spend a lot of money on clothes since you have a uniform.  That's why when ABC network announced the new series, "Pan Am", my interest peaked.  The story line follows stewardesses in the 1960's, paying great detail to getting the society of the period perfectly correct.  However, the one thing they will not show is the actors with lit cigarettes in their hands.
Over the past few years, cigarette smoking has become taboo on major networks as it's perceived as being "impressionable" to some viewers.  I'll still be looking forward to seeing how the series comes out.

Good Night for now.

How I got my Education on a Budget

Dear Diary:

I guess I'm still on school thoughts since my last post.

One year, I asked my Dad to buy me a car.  He laughed and said, "If you need a car that badly, then start saving for one."  That got me on track.  I decided I would do a few simple things:
  • I would divide the things I needed vs the things I wanted ....ugggghhh....that was hard to do.  Tim Horton's coffee vs the grocery store variety; Ben and Jerry's ice cream vs Breyer's; and...sniff...a car vs the bus.
  • I kept a notebook of what I spent so I could be aware of where the money went.  That made me aware of what I had to cut down on.  Fortunately, a bus pass wasn't that expensive.
The car?  Ah yes.  I still couldn't afford it when I graduated but since I looked after my income so well, it wasn't long after that I could go out and buy a beautiful second fourth hand VW.

Good Night for now.

Could I have been a Cheerleader?

Dear Diary:

Around this time of year I think back to my school years.  In high school, I was [as they called it then] a "feminist".  No cutesy, pop-tart image for me - like [heaven forbid!] being a cheerleader!  But one year, my friends bet me that I couldn't make the cheerleading squad so....
Secretly, in the gym, I practiced

          my jumps -

"Rah rah rah...siss boom bah!"

          my acrobatic moves -
"Wish I hadn't eaten those fries"

          my poses -
"TOUCHDOWN!!"

AND - no, I didn't make it! I think deep down inside I would have loved to have been on the squad but...sigh...it wasn't to be.
Good Night for now.

The Bronze Age

Dear Diary:

The Bronze Age was a period of history where bronze technology was introduced in many areas of the world but maybe not all at the same time.  Tin had to be mined and melted, then added to molten copper.  This era used many metals.

One of the best developments, though, was the occurence of writing, which ultimately is allowing me to do my part for the 52 week colour challenge.
 Good Night for now.

Is this the reason for Labour Day?

Dear Diary:

Tomorrow is Labour Day.  In Canada we always celebrate this day on the first Monday in September and have done so since the 1880's.  I usually get together with friends today for a BBQ, potato salad, roasted marshmallows and of course, fireworks.  If the weather is good, we'll go swimming or out in the boat.  It's a great time to have fun while the good weather lasts.

Of course we should remember the reason we have this long weekend.  It was established to recognize the contribution that ordinary working people have made to our way of life.

However, when I turned on the news this morning, what was the Labour Day discussion on a major television network?  It was how after tomorrow it's not "in fashion" to wear white.  Hmmm...guess that's why I decided to iron all my coloured stuff so I'll be ready for tomorrow.

To everyone celebrating tomorrow, enjoy your day.

Good Night for now.

Thinking about the summer

Dear Diary:

Ahhh...it is September 1st so I hauled out my thinking chair to go over the past few months of summer.  I know, I know, I know.  There are still many days of warm weather left but let's face it - the really hot days have already passed us by.

I had a wonderful summer.  I ride a bike (as in motorcycle) so when I managed to get some vacation, I went off into the country whenever I could.  There's something about getting away from the concrete and construction and going to fresh greeness and bright flowers.  I love "touching base with my roots" as they say.

I must admit, I like getting back to the fall - cool nights, warm days, routine.  There's something comfortable about that.  But my summer - yes, my summer - I do become a different person.

Good Night for now.
